There has been a suburban rail system in Cork for over 150 years – and now it’s really coming into its own, with a huge expansion to the current network underway.

The Cobh and Mallow lines are being extended and upgraded, and there are plans to reopen the old Cork-Youghal line as far as Midleton by 2010 with trains running every 15 minutes.

A light-rail system along the lines of LUAS in Dublin has also been proposed for Cork, with a line linking Ballincollig in the west of the city to Mahon in the east via the city centre. Watch this space!
