There are eight islands off the coast of County Cork – Garinish Island, Bere Island, Heir Island, Long Island, Cape Clear (Cléire) Island, Sherkin Island, Dursey Island and Whiddy Island.
Each of these islands – some of which are inhabited and all of which are unspoilt natural environments – is well worth a day-trip or even a longer stay to appreciate the unique island atmosphere.
Ferry services operate to all the islands and Dursey Island, located off the coast of the Beara peninsula, can be reached by Ireland’s only cable car. It’s a ten-minute trip and, weather permitting, is in operation all year round.
